Oh, give me a home where the Buffalo roam
Where the Deer and the Antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the sky is not cloudy all day.
“Home on the Range” is Dr. Brewster Higley’s sonnet to Smith County Kansas. Where today the air is still pure, the deer still play and the white diamond sand yet throws its glittering light from Beaver Creek. Smith County is still a place of inspiration and it’s also home to KSWE 0016.
With 400 acres (125 acres in row crops and 275 acres in pasture and nonproductive areas), four ponds, and a very private location, this property is a sleeper.
The grassland and row crop provide good habitat for upland species such as pheasants and prairie chickens. In fact, prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupi), have a lek on the pasture area of this property. Watching the annual gymnastic-like display on the booming ground is quite fascinating. And, hearing the guttural “boom, boom” is a springtime rite enjoyed by few.
The property also contains four ponds which may provide an opportunity for some waterfowl shooting (it's also located about 28 miles northeast of Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge). I live just a short distance from the property and I've seen ducks on these ponds consistently during the bi-annual migration.
The whitetail and mule deer range overlap in Smith County. Excellent quality deer of both species occupy this part of the state. KDWP allows up to six whitetail deer tags - one antlered and five antlerless permits - to be purchased for this unit (see KDWP regulations for more detail at http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/hunting/big_game/deer/deer_faq). I see deer on this property nearly every time I check it. The small group of trees located on the west side of the property seems to be a particularly popular bedding area.
Douglas Everett said “There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.” KSWE 0016 may be your opportunity to turn your dream into your reality!
While taking a break from your hunting on KSWE 0016, visit the cabin where Dr. Higley penned the unofficial anthem of the west “Home on the Range.” It’s located just a short drive from KSWE 0016 on Kansas Highway 8.
And, if you need a place to stay while hunting, see Monty at the Buckshot Inn in Smith Center, KS. Call him at (785) 282-6644 or (800) 727-7332. Also, ask about the Hunting Lease Network discount.
$1 million in hunting liability insurance included in lease price. Outfitters / Guides must carry additional insurance.
