This farm, which is located about 60 miles west of my home and office, is one that I have visited numerous times. During my visits, I've stumbled on turkeys, deer, coyotes, quail, pheasants and a host of other species utilizing this farms' diverse habitat.

In fact, as a biologist, I have a keen appreciation for property like this one. Its quality habitat includes successional areas that hold quail, agricultural production that provides forage for many species, native grassland for the coyotes to stalk rodent populations, seasonal streams which serve as building blocks in ecological diversification, regulating the flux of nutrients and energy balance in the system.

For many who haven’t spent a great deal of time in the arid steppe/temperate grassland transition in Kansas, it appears as a single-story land form lacking ecological diversity. Nothing could be further from reality. As evidenced by properties like this one, ecological capitulation can be as a high as an eastern deciduous forest. Plus, with the limited human pressure, wildlife variety and production flourishes.
