160 ACRES OF MID STAGE SUCCCESIONAL HABITAT – JUST WHAT QUAIL, TURKEY, AND WHITETAILS LOVE!
As I pulled up to this farm, I thought “yep, this will be a good deer and quail property.” I could immediately see this farm had vegetation characterized by intermingled cool and warm season grasses, and well-established clusters of deciduous (mostly Osage Orange) and cedar trees. This mix is very common in central Kansas. It’s also one of the reasons whitetail, turkey and other species have expanded so successfully through this area.
I visited this property on November 7, 2007. Wow, what a great experience. I flushed a covey of quail near the pond. As I worked across the north end of the property I observed good overhead thermal cover, escape routes, forage – not to mention the crop areas, both on this farm and continuous with it - along with weedy cover that functions as loafing area throughout much of the year.
Because it was getting dark very quickly, I was in a hurry. Thus, I quickly moved down through the center of the farm noticing scrapes and well-used trails. I knew this was an excellent habitat, but confirmation is always a good thing!
As I broke out of the trees into a very small hay meadow located in the middle of the property, I noticed two does moving down the east fence line. I stopped there in the open hay meadow and watched for just a few seconds. Then, I noticed a buck trailing about 50 yards behind them. Throwing up my binoculars, he appeared to be a nice 8. He labored through the thick grass trying to catch the does.
Also included are 160 acres, a pond, great successional wooded habitat and 54 acres of crop area. Take 12 months to hunt all legal species. Max # of hunters 5. ATV's allowed for hunting purposes ONLY. $2 million in hunting liability insurance included in lease price. Outfitters/guides must provide their own additional insurance.
