This 320 acre tract of land is located just eight miles north of Coffeyville, KS - in the heart of the southeastern Kansas deer Mecca. The basic elements of habitat are food, cover, water, and space. But not just any food, cover, and space will do. It must be the right mix of plant and animal communities. With its medium and large tree, and virtually no understory, deer have little access to food and cover and thus can’t thrive in this environment. With all of the nutritive resource concentrated near the top of the trees, mature eastern forests well suited for climbers such as raccoons or squirrels and fliers such as buntings and tanagers – not deer.
